Linear Programming and Optimization: Problems with Solutions

Linear programming problems solved graphically and by the simplex method, diet, production, transportation and assignment problems, integer programming and cutting problems, with step-by-step solutions.

Problem 1
Two food products [tex]P_1[/tex] and [tex]P_2[/tex] contain three nutrients [tex]R_1[/tex], [tex]R_2[/tex] and [tex]R_3[/tex]. One unit of [tex]P_1[/tex] contains [tex]5[/tex] units of [tex]R_1[/tex], [tex]1[/tex] unit of [tex]R_2[/tex] and [tex]1[/tex] unit of [tex]R_3[/tex], and one unit of [tex]P_2[/tex] contains [tex]1[/tex] unit of [tex]R_1[/tex], [tex]1[/tex] unit of [tex]R_2[/tex] and [tex]2[/tex] units of [tex]R_3[/tex]. A mixture of the two products must contain at least [tex]10[/tex] units of [tex]R_1[/tex], at least [tex]6[/tex] units of [tex]R_2[/tex] and at least [tex]8[/tex] units of [tex]R_3[/tex]. One unit of [tex]P_1[/tex] costs [tex]3[/tex] dollars and one unit of [tex]P_2[/tex] costs [tex]2[/tex] dollars. What is the minimum cost (in dollars) of such a mixture?
Problem 2
Find the set of values of the function [tex]z=-x_1-x_2-x_3[/tex] subject to the constraints [tex]3x_1+3x_2+x_3\le 6[/tex], [tex]x_1+x_2+3x_3\le 6[/tex], [tex]x_1+x_2+x_3\le 1[/tex], [tex]x_1, x_2, x_3\ge 0[/tex].
Problem 3
A company starts producing a new kind of item. At a price of [tex]x[/tex] dollars per item, the demand is [tex]d(x)=400-10x[/tex] items. The variable costs are [tex]10[/tex] dollars per item and the fixed costs are [tex]2000[/tex] dollars. The company produces and sells exactly as many items as the demand. What is the maximum profit (in dollars) the company can make?
