Even and Odd Functions: Problems with Solutions

Deciding whether a function is even, odd or neither, and using the properties of even and odd functions, with solutions.

Problem 1
The odd function [tex]f(x)[/tex] is defined on [tex]\left(-\infty , +\infty\right)[/tex], and [tex]f(x)=x^4[/tex] for [tex]x\ge 0[/tex]. Find [tex]f(-1)[/tex].
Problem 2
Prove that the function [tex]f(x)=\sqrt{x^2+1}\,\sin ^2 x[/tex] is even.
Problem 3
Prove that the function [tex]g(x)=x^2-\tan ^2 x[/tex] is even.
Problem 4
Prove that the function [tex]h(x)=\frac{\sin x}{\tan x+\cot x}[/tex] is even.
Problem 5
The graph of which of the following functions is symmetric with respect to the origin?
Problem 6
Find the value of the real parameter [tex]a[/tex] for which the function [tex]f(x)=2^{(a-2)x^2+(a-1)x-1}[/tex] is even.
Problem 7
The function [tex]f(x)[/tex] is defined for every real number and is odd. For every [tex]x\ge 0[/tex] its values coincide with the values of the function [tex]g(x)=x(x+4)\left(x^2-4\right)[/tex]. How many solutions does the equation [tex]f(x)=0[/tex] have?
Problem 8
The function [tex]f(x)[/tex] is even and the equation [tex]f(x)=5[/tex] has a unique root. Prove that this root is equal to [tex]0[/tex].
Problem 9
Find all odd functions of the form [tex]f(x)=\frac{ax^2+b}{x+c}[/tex], where [tex]a[/tex], [tex]b[/tex] and [tex]c[/tex] are real numbers, such that [tex]f(1)=2[/tex] and [tex]f(x)\ge 2[/tex] for every [tex]x\gt 0[/tex].
