Mathematical Induction: Problems with Solutions

Proofs by mathematical induction: sums, products, divisibility, inequalities and recursive sequences, each with the base case and the inductive step written out.

Problem 1

Problem 2
Prove that for every natural number [tex]n[/tex] and every real number [tex]x\ge -1[/tex] Bernoulli's inequality [tex]\left(1+x\right)^{n}\ge 1+nx[/tex] holds.
Problem 3
Prove that for every natural number [tex]n[/tex] the number [tex]4^{n}+15n-1[/tex] is divisible by [tex]9[/tex].
Problem 4
Find a formula for the product [tex]P_{n}=\left(1-\frac{1}{4}\right)\left(1-\frac{1}{9}\right)\left(1-\frac{1}{16}\right)\ldots\left(1-\frac{1}{n^{2}}\right)[/tex], where [tex]n\ge 2[/tex] is a natural number, and prove it by mathematical induction.
Problem 5
The sequence [tex]\left\{a_{n}\right\}[/tex] is defined by [tex]a_{1}=1[/tex], [tex]a_{2}=8[/tex] and [tex]a_{n}=a_{n-1}+2a_{n-2}[/tex] for every natural number [tex]n\ge 3[/tex]. Prove that [tex]a_{n}=3\times 2^{n-1}+2\times (-1)^{n}[/tex] for every natural number [tex]n[/tex].
Problem 6
Prove that for every natural number [tex]n[/tex] the following inequality holds: [tex]\frac{1}{n+1}+\frac{1}{n+2}+\ldots+\frac{1}{3n+1}\gt 1[/tex].
Problem 7
Prove that for every natural number [tex]n[/tex] and every real number [tex]x[/tex] the inequality [tex]\left|\sin nx\right|\le n\left|\sin x\right|[/tex] holds.
Problem 8
The real number [tex]x\ne 0[/tex] is such that [tex]x+\frac{1}{x}[/tex] is an integer. Prove that [tex]x^{n}+\frac{1}{x^{n}}[/tex] is an integer for every natural number [tex]n[/tex].
Problem 9
There are [tex]n[/tex] circles in the plane such that every two of them intersect at two points and no three of them pass through the same point. Into how many parts do these circles divide the plane?
Problem 10
Find the smallest natural number [tex]n_{0}[/tex] such that the inequality [tex]2^{n}\gt n^{3}[/tex] holds for every natural number [tex]n\ge n_{0}[/tex].

Problem 11
We have an unlimited supply of [tex]5[/tex]-cent and [tex]7[/tex]-cent postage stamps. Find the smallest natural number [tex]Z[/tex] such that for every natural number [tex]k\ge Z[/tex] a sum of exactly [tex]k[/tex] cents can be paid using only these stamps.
Problem 12
Prove that for every natural number [tex]n\gt 1[/tex] the following inequality holds: [tex]\frac{1}{2}\times \frac{3}{4}\times \frac{5}{6}\times \ldots\times \frac{2n-1}{2n}\lt\frac{1}{\sqrt{3n-1}}[/tex].
Problem 13
Prove that for every natural number [tex]n[/tex] the number [tex]82^{n+1}+(45n-82)\times 127^{n}[/tex] is divisible by [tex]45^{2}[/tex].
Problem 14
An L-tromino is a figure made of three unit squares, obtained from a square of side [tex]2[/tex] (made of four unit squares) by removing one unit square; it looks like the letter L. A square of side [tex]2^{n}[/tex] is divided into [tex]4^{n}[/tex] unit squares. All of them are red, except for one blue unit square in an arbitrary position. Prove that for every natural number [tex]n[/tex] the red part of the square can be covered with L-trominoes without overlaps and without going beyond it.
