Math Olympiad Problems for Grades 9 and 10: Problems with Solutions

By
Twenty olympiad-style problems for grades 9 and 10 with full solutions: systems of equations, circular arrangements, magic squares, similar triangles, cyclic quadrilaterals, power of a point, Diophantine equations and logic assignment puzzles. Each problem is multiple choice and grouped by difficulty: easy, medium and difficult.
Problem 1
A fleet of transport rovers is being maintained on a lunar base. There are two types of rovers: ”Alpha” rovers which have [tex]4[/tex] wheels, and ”Beta” heavy rovers which have [tex]6[/tex] wheels. If a total of [tex]45[/tex] rovers and [tex]210[/tex] wheels are counted in the hangar, how many ”Alpha” rovers are there?
Problem 2
A communication laser sends data pulses in a specific, expanding pattern. The intensity sequence of the pulses is recorded as follows: [tex]1, 2, 2, 3, 3, 3, 4, 4, 4, 4, 5, ...[/tex] If this pattern continues, what will be the value of the 50th pulse in this sequence?
Problem 3
A [tex]3 \times 3[/tex] grid of miniature fusion reactors needs to be balanced. Power levels using the whole numbers from [tex]2[/tex] to [tex]10[/tex] (using each number exactly once) must be assigned to the [tex]9[/tex] reactors. To maintain core stability, the sum of the power levels in every row, every column, and both main diagonals must be exactly the same. Which power level must be placed in the central reactor?
Problem 4
A data-transmission laser is being aligned between two perfectly parallel space station panels. The laser beam originates from the top panel, reflects off a floating mirror node at point [tex]P[/tex], and hits the bottom panel. The angle formed between the top panel and the laser beam is [tex]42^\circ[/tex], and the angle formed between the bottom panel and the reflected beam is [tex]36^\circ[/tex]. What is the exact measure of the reflection angle [tex]x[/tex] at node [tex]P[/tex]?

Problem 5
Five different processing modules must be connected in a straight line. However, for thermal safety reasons, the Main Module ([tex]P[/tex]) and the Backup Module ([tex]R[/tex]) can never be placed right next to each other. In how many different ways can the [tex]5[/tex] modules be arranged?
