Math Olympiad Problems for Grades 9 and 10: Very Difficult Problems with Solutions

By
Problem 1
The resonance frequencies of the main thrusters require two integer settings, [tex]x[/tex] and [tex]y[/tex], such that their product minus three times their sum equals exactly [tex]17[/tex]. Algebraically, the settings must satisfy the Diophantine equation: [tex]xy - 3x - 3y = 17[/tex]. What is the largest possible value of the setting [tex]x[/tex] among all valid integer solutions?
Problem 2
A high-efficiency reflective sensor has a base that is a precise quarter-circle panel with a radius of [tex]R[/tex] cm. Inside this panel, a smaller, perfectly full circle is inscribed such that it is tangent to both straight edges (radii) of the quarter-circle and to its outer curved arc. If the area of the large quarter-circle panel is exactly [tex]36\pi \text{ cm}^2[/tex], what is the exact area of the inscribed full circle?

Problem 3
To minimize energy consumption, two dynamic variables for a deep-space probe, [tex]a[/tex] and [tex]b[/tex] (which are real positive numbers), must be set to precisely satisfy a complex non-linear system derived from orbital mechanics:
1. [tex]a\sqrt{b} + b\sqrt{a} = 30[/tex]
2. [tex]\sqrt{a} + \sqrt{b} = 5[/tex]
What is the value of the product [tex]a \times b[/tex]?
Problem 4
A circular radar grid is analyzed. A laser beam, [tex]L_1[/tex], forms a chord [tex]AB = 18[/tex] cm on the circle. A target point [tex]P[/tex] is placed strictly outside the circle, positioned exactly along the infinite line containing chord [tex]AB[/tex]. The distance from target [tex]P[/tex] to the closer endpoint [tex]B[/tex] is exactly [tex]6[/tex] cm. A second beam, [tex]L_2[/tex], starts from the same target point [tex]P[/tex] and forms a second chord [tex]CD[/tex] that is exactly [tex]10[/tex] cm long. Beam [tex]L_2[/tex] intersects the circle at point [tex]C[/tex] (closer to [tex]P[/tex]) and point [tex]D[/tex] (further from [tex]P[/tex]). What is the exact distance from target [tex]P[/tex] to the start of the second chord at point [tex]C[/tex]?

Problem 5
Five crew members ([tex]A, B, C, D, E[/tex]) are tasked with configuring [tex]5[/tex] different processing cores, numbered [tex]1, 2, 3, 4[/tex], and [tex]5[/tex]. The assignment must follow these rules:
1. Core [tex]1[/tex] must be assigned to either [tex]A[/tex] or [tex]E[/tex].
2. Core [tex]5[/tex] cannot be assigned to [tex]C[/tex] or [tex]D[/tex].
3. [tex]B[/tex] can be assigned to Core [tex]2[/tex] or Core [tex]3[/tex].
4. If Core [tex]1[/tex] is assigned to [tex]E[/tex], then Core [tex]4[/tex] must be assigned to [tex]D[/tex].
5. Exactly one core is assigned to each person, and no person shares a core.
If Core [tex]2[/tex] is assigned to [tex]C[/tex], which core must be assigned to [tex]D[/tex]?
