Mixture Problems: Problems with Solutions

Mixture problems solved with percentages, proportions and equations: diluting and concentrating solutions, mixing two solutions or alloys to get a given concentration, drying and evaporation, replacing part of a mixture, gold and other alloys, and mixing goods with different prices.
Problem 1
Brass is an alloy of copper and zinc. [tex]200[/tex] ounces of brass contain [tex]112[/tex] ounces of copper. What is the ratio of copper to zinc in this alloy?
Problem 2
One part of water is added to four parts of a [tex]7.5\%[/tex] alcohol solution. What is the concentration of the new solution (in %)?
Problem 3
How many gallons of water must be added to [tex]9[/tex] gallons of a [tex]10\%[/tex] salt solution to dilute it to [tex]6\%[/tex]?
Problem 4
A chef works with ground meat made of veal and pork. To [tex]12[/tex] lb of ground meat that is [tex]75\%[/tex] veal he adds [tex]20[/tex] lb of ground meat that is [tex]49\%[/tex] pork. What percent of the new mixture is veal?
Problem 5
Water was added to [tex]2[/tex] lb of a [tex]50\%[/tex] sugar solution, and a [tex]30\%[/tex] sugar solution was obtained. What is the ratio of the amount of the new solution to the amount of the old one?
Problem 6
[tex]50[/tex] fl oz of a concentrate are mixed with [tex]30[/tex] fl oz of water, and the resulting solution has a concentration of [tex]35\%[/tex]. What is the concentration of the concentrate (in %)?
Problem 7
Two alloys contain [tex]21\%[/tex] and [tex]28\%[/tex] copper. In what ratio by weight must they be mixed to get an alloy containing [tex]24\%[/tex] copper?
Problem 8
How many pounds of [tex]26\%[/tex] sulfuric acid must be mixed with [tex]40[/tex] lb of [tex]68\%[/tex] sulfuric acid to get acid with a concentration of [tex]32\%[/tex]?
Problem 9
A gold–silver alloy of fineness [tex]800[/tex] (that is, [tex]800[/tex] parts of gold per [tex]1000[/tex] parts of alloy) weighing [tex]1.5[/tex] lb was made from two alloys of fineness [tex]700[/tex] and [tex]850[/tex]. How many pounds of the alloy of fineness [tex]700[/tex] were used?
Problem 10
Two kinds of flour, costing [tex]90[/tex] cents and [tex]95[/tex] cents per pound, were mixed to get [tex]100[/tex] lb of flour costing [tex]93[/tex] cents per pound. How many pounds of the cheaper flour were used?

Problem 11
Fresh mushrooms contain [tex]78\%[/tex] water, and dried mushrooms contain [tex]12\%[/tex] water. How many pounds of fresh mushrooms are needed to get [tex]2[/tex] lb of dried mushrooms?
