Cross-Sections, Angles and Distances in Space: Problems with Solutions

Solid geometry problems on lines and planes in space: the angle between a line and a plane, dihedral angles, the theorem of three perpendiculars, the distance from a point to a plane and between skew lines, and cross-sections of cubes, prisms and pyramids. Each problem has a step-by-step solution and a figure.

Problem 1
The segment [tex]AB[/tex] does not intersect the plane [tex]\alpha[/tex]. The point [tex]M[/tex] lies on [tex]AB[/tex] so that [tex]AM:MB=2:3[/tex]. The points [tex]A_1[/tex], [tex]B_1[/tex] and [tex]M_1[/tex] are the orthogonal projections of [tex]A[/tex], [tex]B[/tex] and [tex]M[/tex], respectively, onto [tex]\alpha[/tex]. If [tex]AA_1=4[/tex] in and [tex]BB_1=9[/tex] in, find [tex]MM_1[/tex] (in inches).
Problem 2
A regular tetrahedron [tex]ABCD[/tex] with edge [tex]1[/tex] is given. The point [tex]M[/tex] is the center of the face [tex]ACD[/tex] and the point [tex]N[/tex] is the midpoint of the edge [tex]BC[/tex]. Find the sine of the angle between the line [tex]BM[/tex] and the plane [tex](AND)[/tex].
Problem 3
In the triangular pyramid [tex]ABCD[/tex] the edge [tex]CD[/tex] is perpendicular to the plane [tex](ABC)[/tex] and has length [tex]4[/tex] in, while [tex]AD=BD=10[/tex] in and [tex]AB=12[/tex] in. Find the angle between the planes [tex](ABD)[/tex] and [tex](ABC)[/tex] (in degrees).
Problem 4
A right triangular prism [tex]ABCA_1B_1C_1[/tex] is given. Its base [tex]ABC[/tex] is a right triangle with legs [tex]AC=15[/tex] in and [tex]BC=20[/tex] in. The distance from the vertex [tex]C_1[/tex] to the edge [tex]AB[/tex] is [tex]13[/tex] in. Find the height of the prism (in inches).
Problem 5
The points [tex]A[/tex] and [tex]B[/tex] lie in the plane [tex]\alpha[/tex], and the point [tex]C[/tex] does not lie in it. The line [tex]CA[/tex] forms an angle of [tex]30^{\circ}[/tex] with [tex]\alpha[/tex], [tex]CA=10[/tex] in and [tex]CB=5\sqrt{2}[/tex] in. Find the angle (in degrees) between the line [tex]CB[/tex] and the plane [tex]\alpha[/tex].
Problem 6
A cube [tex]ABCDA_1B_1C_1D_1[/tex] with lateral edges [tex]AA_1[/tex], [tex]BB_1[/tex], [tex]CC_1[/tex] and [tex]DD_1[/tex] is given. Find the angle (in degrees) between the line [tex]AD_1[/tex] and the plane [tex](ACC_1)[/tex].
Problem 7
The leg [tex]AC=a[/tex] of the isosceles right triangle [tex]ABC[/tex] ([tex]\angle ACB=90^{\circ}[/tex]) lies in the plane [tex]\alpha[/tex], and the orthogonal projection of the leg [tex]BC[/tex] onto [tex]\alpha[/tex] has length [tex]\frac{a\sqrt{2}}{2}[/tex]. Find the angle between the hypotenuse [tex]AB[/tex] and the plane [tex]\alpha[/tex] (in degrees).
Problem 8
The base of a pyramid is a square, and the lateral edges of the pyramid are equal. A plane is drawn through the apex of the pyramid and the midpoints of two adjacent sides of the base; it forms an angle of [tex]60^{\circ}[/tex] with the plane of the base. The area of the resulting cross-section is [tex]S[/tex]. Find the length of the base edge of the pyramid.
Problem 9
A regular quadrilateral pyramid [tex]ABCDM[/tex] with base [tex]ABCD[/tex] and apex [tex]M[/tex] is given. The point [tex]O[/tex] is the center of the base and [tex]N[/tex] is the midpoint of the edge [tex]AB[/tex]. Prove that the planes [tex](OMN)[/tex] and [tex](AMB)[/tex] are perpendicular.
Problem 10
The base of the quadrilateral pyramid [tex]ABCDM[/tex] is the rectangle [tex]ABCD[/tex], and the lateral edge [tex]MD[/tex] is perpendicular to the plane of the base. Prove that [tex]MA^2+MC^2=MB^2+MD^2[/tex].

Problem 11
Point [tex]M[/tex] is the midpoint of the lateral edge [tex]AP[/tex] of a regular quadrilateral pyramid [tex]ABCDP[/tex]. The plane [tex](BCM)[/tex] meets the edge [tex]DP[/tex] at a point [tex]N[/tex]. Prove that [tex]BMNC[/tex] is an isosceles trapezoid.
