Mathematical Statistics: Problems with Solutions

Mean, median, quartiles and variance of samples, unbiased estimates, maximum likelihood and the method of moments, confidence intervals, z- and t-tests, correlation and least-squares regression lines, with step-by-step solutions.

Problem 1
On a test in one class, graded on a scale from [tex]2[/tex] to [tex]6[/tex], the students received [tex]2[/tex] poor grades ([tex]2[/tex]), [tex]4[/tex] average grades ([tex]3[/tex]), [tex]6[/tex] good grades ([tex]4[/tex]), [tex]10[/tex] very good grades ([tex]5[/tex]) and [tex]1[/tex] excellent grade ([tex]6[/tex]). Find the median of the statistical series formed by these grades.
Problem 2
The arithmetic mean of [tex]10[/tex] numbers is [tex]17[/tex]. If one of them is removed, the arithmetic mean of the remaining [tex]9[/tex] numbers is [tex]16[/tex]. If one more of the numbers is removed, the arithmetic mean of the remaining [tex]8[/tex] numbers is [tex]15[/tex]. Find the product of the two removed numbers.
Problem 3
Let [tex]x_1, x_2, \ldots, x_n[/tex] be data with arithmetic mean [tex]\bar{x}=\frac{1}{n}\sum_{i=1}^{n} x_i[/tex]. Prove that the sum of the deviations of the data from the arithmetic mean equals zero, i.e. [tex]\sum_{i=1}^{n}(x_i-\bar{x})=0[/tex].
Problem 4
A random variable [tex]X[/tex] was observed [tex]6[/tex] times and the values [tex]2.1, \ 3.2, \ 4.6, \ 2.9, \ 3.5, \ 4.1[/tex] were obtained. Find the unbiased estimate [tex]s^2[/tex] of the variance of [tex]X[/tex].
Problem 5
The mean of a data set is [tex]60[/tex] and its variance is [tex]4[/tex]. Using Chebyshev's inequality, find the narrowest symmetric interval around the mean that, by this inequality, is guaranteed to contain at least [tex]\frac{8}{9}[/tex] of the data.
Problem 6
The energy of a body was measured with [tex]9[/tex] different detectors. It is known that the measurement result is a normally distributed random variable with standard deviation [tex]\sigma=10[/tex]. The values obtained are [tex]260, \ 216, \ 259, \ 206, \ 265, \ 284, \ 291, \ 229, \ 249[/tex]. Find a [tex]95\%[/tex] confidence interval for the unknown energy (the expected value), with the endpoints rounded to two decimal places. Use [tex]z_{0.975}=1.96[/tex].
