Geometric Probability: Difficult Problems with Solutions

Problem 1
A bus runs once a day. It arrives at the stop at a random moment between [tex]10{:}00[/tex] and [tex]10{:}05[/tex], waits [tex]5[/tex] minutes and leaves. A passenger comes to the stop at a random moment between [tex]10{:}00[/tex] and [tex]10{:}15[/tex], independently of the bus; if the bus has not arrived yet, the passenger waits for it. What is the probability that the passenger catches the bus?
Problem 2
Two people agree to meet between [tex]10[/tex] and [tex]11[/tex] o'clock in the morning. Each of them arrives at a random moment of this interval, independently of the other, waits exactly [tex]5[/tex] minutes and, if the other has not come, leaves. What is the probability that they meet?
Problem 3
Two ships are to arrive at the same berth within one day ([tex]24[/tex] hours). Their arrival times are independent, and every moment of the day is equally likely for each of them. The first ship stays at the berth for [tex]2[/tex] hours and the second for [tex]1[/tex] hour, and the berth can serve only one ship at a time. What is the probability that one of the ships has to wait for the berth to become free?
Problem 4
In a rectangular coordinate system, the points [tex]A(2, 1)[/tex], [tex]B(-2, 1)[/tex], [tex]C(-2, -0.5)[/tex] and [tex]D(2, -0.5)[/tex] are given. A point [tex]M(x, y)[/tex] of the rectangle [tex]ABCD[/tex] is chosen at random. What is the probability that the point [tex]M[/tex] lies in the disk with center at the origin and radius [tex]1[/tex]?
Problem 5
The coefficients [tex]a[/tex] and [tex]b[/tex] of the equation [tex]ax^2+bx+1=0[/tex] are chosen at random so that the point [tex](a, b)[/tex] is a random point of the rectangle [tex]0\lt a\lt 1[/tex], [tex]-1\lt b\lt 1[/tex]. What is the probability that the equation has real roots?
