Discrete Mathematics and Graph Theory: Difficult Problems with Solutions

Problem 1
Find the linear homogeneous recurrence relation with constant coefficients of the lowest possible order that is satisfied by the sequence [tex]f(n)=(-1)^n\binom{n}{3}[/tex], [tex]n=0, 1, 2, \ldots[/tex].
Problem 2
The sequence [tex]\{a_n\}_{n=1}^{\infty}[/tex] is defined by [tex]a_1=0[/tex] and [tex]a_{n+1}=(n+1)a_n+(-1)^{n+1}[/tex] for [tex]n\ge 1[/tex]. Prove that [tex]a_n=n!\sum_{k=0}^{n}\frac{(-1)^k}{k!}[/tex] for every [tex]n\ge 1[/tex].
Problem 3
The Hamming distance between two binary vectors of the same length is the number of positions in which they differ. Given the vectors [tex]\alpha=(1, 1, 0, 0, 1, 0, 1)[/tex] and [tex]\beta=(0, 1, 1, 0, 1, 1, 0)[/tex], how many vectors [tex]\gamma\in\{0, 1\}^7[/tex] are at equal Hamming distances from [tex]\alpha[/tex] and from [tex]\beta[/tex]?
Problem 4
How many simple graphs with vertex set [tex]\{1,2,3,4,5\}[/tex] are there such that neither the graph [tex]G[/tex] nor its complement [tex]\overline{G}[/tex] contains a triangle? (The vertices are labelled, i.e. different graphs on this vertex set are counted separately even if they are isomorphic.)
Problem 5
A simple planar graph [tex]G=(V,E)[/tex] and a real number [tex]p[/tex] with [tex]0\le p\lt 100[/tex] are given. Prove that at least [tex]p\%[/tex] of the vertices of [tex]G[/tex] have degree less than [tex]\frac{600}{100-p}[/tex].
Problem 6
Mr. and Mrs. Ivanov invited [tex]4[/tex] married couples to their home. When they met, some of the [tex]10[/tex] people present shook hands; nobody shook hands with his or her own partner, and any two people shook hands at most once. Then Mrs. Ivanova asked each of the other [tex]9[/tex] people how many people he or she had shaken hands with, and received [tex]9[/tex] different answers. How many people did Mrs. Ivanova shake hands with?
