Solving Linear Equations Worksheet

Solve each equation and write the value of $x$ in the box. If the answer is a fraction, write it like 1/2. A mark next to the box shows if your answer is right. Reload the page for 15 new equations.

How to solve a linear equation

Get $x$ alone on one side of the equation. Whatever you do to one side, do the same to the other side.

Example: 7x + 9 = 23

  1. Subtract 9 from both sides: ${7x = 14}$.
  2. Divide both sides by 7: ${x = 2}$.

Check: ${7 \times 2 + 9 = 23}$.

Example: 3 − 2x = 5

  1. Subtract 3 from both sides: ${-2x = 2}$.
  2. Divide both sides by $-2$: ${x = -1}$.

Check: ${3 - 2 \times (-1) = 3 + 2 = 5}$.

When the last division does not come out even, the answer is a fraction: ${4x = 2}$ gives ${x = \frac{2}{4} = \frac{1}{2}}$.
