How to add and subtract two-digit numbers

Write the numbers in a column: ones under ones, tens under tens. Work with the ones first, then the tens.

Addition: 47 + 36

$\begin{array}{r}47\\+\,36\\\hline 83\end{array}$

  1. Ones: $7 + 6 = 13$. Write 3 and carry 1 ten to the tens.
  2. Tens: $4 + 3 + 1 = 8$.

So $47 + 36 = 83$.

Subtraction: 64 − 29

$\begin{array}{r}64\\-\,29\\\hline 35\end{array}$

  1. $4$ is less than $9$, so take 1 ten from the 6 tens. Now you have 5 tens and 14 ones.
  2. Ones: $14 - 9 = 5$.
  3. Tens: $5 - 2 = 3$.

So $64 - 29 = 35$.

Check with the opposite operation: $83 - 36 = 47$ and $35 + 29 = 64$.
