Short multiplication formula help

Is there any short multiplication formula for:
a^2 + b^2 = ?

Perhaps you are thinking of the difference of squares ...

a^2 - b^2 = (a+b)(a - b)

Although it isn't exactly a formula...

Perhaps [tex](a+ bi)(a- bi)= a^2+ b^2[/tex]?

There’s no simple “short formula” for a² + b² like for (a + b)², but it stays as a² + b² since it doesn’t factor nicely over the real numbers.
