A dozen pencils sells for $3.25. What is the cost of 144 pencils?

We can make a proportion:
Let x be the cost of 144 pencils
[tex]\frac{3.25}{12}[/tex]=[tex]\frac{x}{144}[/tex]
12x=3.25*144
x=12*3.25=39
144 pencils cost 39 dollars
