Area and time question

Area and time question

Postby Guest » Mon May 28, 2018 7:39 pm

Hi guys, having trouble with this math question and hoping you could help!

What is the time needed to plough this field with a) the old tractor and b) the new tractor:
- The area of the field is 100 m x 100 m square
- The width that both tractors can plough is 100 cm wide
- The speed is 0.5 hectare per hour for the old mower
- The speed is 1 hectare per hour for the new mower

Can you guys help me with the working out as well as the answer?

100mx100m = 1 hectare

So the new tractror needs 1 hour and the old ones 2 hours.

But I do not know why we need this: "The width that both tractors can plough is 100 cm wide"

A "hectare" is a unit of area not length. That is why "Guest" could answer without need the width.

Certainly, let's break down the problem step by step.

First, let's calculate the area of the field in hectares since we have speed in hectares per hour.

The area of the field is given as 100 m x 100 m, which is 10,000 square meters (m²). To convert this to hectares, remember that 1 hectare is equal to 10,000 square meters. So, the field is:

10,000 m² = 1 hectare

Now, we know the area of the field is 1 hectare.

a) For the old tractor:

Speed is 0.5 hectare per hour.
To find the time needed for the old tractor to plow the field, you can use the formula:

Time (in hours) = Area (in hectares) / Speed (in hectares per hour)

Time = 1 hectare / 0.5 hectare per hour = 2 hours

So, it would take the old tractor 2 hours to plow the field.

b) For the new tractor:

Speed is 1 hectare per hour.
Using the same formula:

Time = 1 hectare / 1 hectare per hour = 1 hour

So, it would take the new tractor 1 hour to plow the field.

To summarize:
a) The old tractor would take 2 hours to plow the field.
b) The new tractor would take 1 hour to plow the field.

Two hours with an old tractor

One hour for a new tractor

Note: No additional computation is required because the speed (hectares per hour) already takes into consideration the plough's width (100 cm).
