Cylinders and Sloping Roofs

Cylinders and Sloping Roofs

Postby wjt » Fri May 06, 2011 4:18 pm

I have a model house which includes a cylindrical tower passing through a sloping roof. I would like to know how to calculate the oval shaped hole in the roof which will fit snugly around the tower. Any help will be much appreciated.

If it is to be fitted in from inside , the calculation is Area = ( * inner width X * inner length ) X 0.8 .
* inner width = the shortest distance
* inner length = the longest distance

where ,
( Pi = 22/7 X 0.5 X 0.5 = 0.8 )

If it is to be fitted in from outside , the calculation is Area = ( * outer width X * outer length ) X 0.8 .
* outer width = the shortest distance
* outer length = the longest distance

* total width = inner width + outer width
* total length = inner length + outer length

Total Area = Total Width + Total Length .

Area Difference = Total Width - Total Length .

For Sloping Roof ,

Lets sloping Roof be D ,

D = Total Area + Area Difference .
or
D = Total Area + ( Area Differnce / N ) .

Where N = ( 2,3,4.....N ) times the closing of oval faced hole on the sloping roof, is required fitting .

I hope this will be helpful .

Hi! That sounds like a really interesting project. To get the shape of the hole, you'll want to project the circular cross-section of the tower onto the sloped surface—this will give you an ellipse. There are some good online calculators or CAD tools that can help with that. Also, if you're planning to cover that area with durable material, companies like Stabilit America offer roofing panels that are easy to shape and work with. Good luck!

:D :) :wink:
