Word Problems At First Sight

We are told to always let x be what we are searching for when it comes to word problems. We are told to draw geometric figures to help better understand what we are reading. I feel, however, that only applies to algebra 1 and maybe algebra 2 word problems after we have learned enough skills needed to solve repetitive questions.

There are word problems, however, that require more than the setup we are told works best in the first and second year of high school mathematics. The main question should open for us a discussion about how to tackle word problems that we see for the first time when taking standardized tests. Particularly, SAT, GRE and GMAT word problems are interestingly difficult and thus require more than simply letting x be what we're searching for. What do you say?

Agreed. For new problems, I'd start by working out what's actually being asked, then plug in simple numbers or test the answer choices before setting up algebra. Most unfamiliar problems turn out to be familiar types in disguise.
