There are 14 marketing firms hiring new graduates. Kate randomly found the recruitment ads of six of these firms and sent them her resume. If three of these marketing firms are in Maryland, what is the probability that Kate did not apply to a marketing firm in Maryland?

So three of the original 14 marketing firms were in Maryland, 11 were not. The probability the first firm Kate applied to was not in Maryland is 11/14. If it was not in Maryland that leaves 10 out of 13 marketing firms not in Maryland. The probability the second firm Kate applied to was not in Maryland is 10/13. If it was not in Maryland that leaves 9 out of 12 marketing firms not in Maryland. The probability the third firm Kate applied to was not in Maryland is 9/12= 3/4.

The probability none of the firms Kate applied to were in Maryland is [tex]\frac{11}{14}\cdot\frac{10}{13}\cdot\frac{3}{4}= \frac{330}{728}= \frac{165}{364}[/tex].
