Word problem on calculus

Word problem on calculus

Postby Guest » Mon Sep 02, 2019 8:33 pm

This problem is from my calculus class, I've spent hours on it and can't figure it out

"A submarine dives at an angle of 10° to the surface of the water. The submarine travels at a speed of about 12 feet per second. About how deep is the submarine, to the nearest whole foot, after a minute?"

If you could help, thanks xoxo

This problem may have been in a Calculus text but it doesn't require any Calculus. It is a trigonometry problem. Since "the submarine travels at a speed of about 12 feet per second" in one minute it will have traveled 12(60)= 720 feet. You have a right triangle with one angle 10 degrees and hypotenuse 720 feet. What is the depth (the length of the side opposite the 10 degree angle)?
