Suppose there are initially "N" nails in the jar.
"On Monday afternoon Mr. Wright added 45 nails out to his jar."
So now there are N+ 45 nails in the jar.
"The next day he removed 40% of the jars contents in the morning"
40% of N+ 45 is 0.40(N+ 45)= 0.4N+ 18.
"and a further 22 nails in the afternoon."
So now there are 0.4N+ 18+ 22= 0.4N+ 40 nails in the jar.
"During the rest of the week he removed 75% of the remaining nails"
He removed 75% so there were 100- 75= 25% left. 25% of 0.4N+ 40 is 0.25(0.4N+ 40)= 0.1N+ 10 nails now in the jar.
"adding 63 on Friday".
0.1n+ 10+ 63= 0.1N+ 73 nails in the jar.
"Leaving himself with 140 nails in the jar."
So 0.1N+ 73= 140.
Solve for N.
