Please help with this age problem which I thought was easy, but I seem to have lost the plot with how to work it out.
In twenty three years time, Phil will be 3 times the age that Kevin is now. In six years time, Kevin will be half the age that Phil is now. How old is Phil?

Let "p" be Phil's currant age and let "K" be Kevin's currant age.

"In twenty three years time, Phil will be 3 times the age that Kevin is now."
In 23 years, Phil's age will be P+ 23. P+ 23= 3K. That can also be written P= 3K- 23.

"In six years time, Kevin will be half the age that Phil is now."'
In 6 years, Kevin's age will be K+ 6. K+ 6= P/2. Multiplying both sides by 2, P= 2(K+ 6)= 2K+ 12.

What values of P and K satisfy both P= 3K- 23 and P= 2K+ 12?

Let's hope Phil lives to be "3 times the age that Kevin is now"!

So Phil is 82 and Kev is 35. Thanks for your help in solving this

Hey,

The answer is as below:

P+23= 3K, P=3k-23
K+6=p/2, P=2K+12

which means, 3k-23= 2K+12, k=35.

Putting k in any of the above equations, P= 82
