If we wish to use of algebra for this problem, as this is an algebra word problem forum.... we should proceed as follows.......
Let the unknown number of bunnies equal X ......
That is use a symbol to denote the unknown quantity........
Then express the information given in the question as mathematical facts or sentences.....
Each bunny has 2 ears, so total number of ears is 2X.
Each bunny has 4 legs so total number of legs is 4X
The total number of legs and ears added together is 36.
We can write this in the form of an equation so as to express it mathematically as the sum of the individual items is equal to the overall total of all items added together.
2X + 4X = 36
now simplify and collect like terms......
6X = 36
now divide both sides of the equation by 6 to get a value for one "X".
What you do on one side of the equation you must do to the other to keep balance.
So...... X = 6
So there are 6 bunnies.
