Use a proportion:

1 cake / 38 min. = 20 cakes / x min.: cake is to minutes as cakes are to minutes.

Cross multiply:

1 * x = 38 * 20

x = 760 min. = 760 / 60 min. per hr. = 12.66 hrs. (if you want to use hrs.)

Additional:

You can also convert the 38 min. to hrs.

38/60 = .6333 hrs.

Using same as before:

1 / .6333 = 20 / x

x = 12.66 hrs.

If one cake takes 38 mins to cook then If I put 20 cakes in they will also take 38 mins to cook. The oven needs to be big enough to hold 20 cakes or else a conveyor belt system. The oven will be at a particular temperature and any cake will need to be baked for 38 mins ONLY.

Are the previous posters saying that I can keep cakes in the oven for 12 hours.......they would be burnt to a cinder.

If the oven only holds one cake to bake at a time then each cake will take 38 mins and 20 of them will take 20 x 38 = 760 mins = 12 hours and 40 mins

Yes OK.
But it is not a ratio and proportion question

It is simply a multiplying problem

Example...
If an item weight 10 lbs then 20 of them will weigh 20 x 10 = 200 lbs

The wording is similar to problems I have read that used proportions to solve:

" If 90 lbs. of wire weighs 18 lb., what will 110 lbs. of the same kind weigh? "

I assumed the cake problem was a proportion as well.

Yes examples like this can be solved using proportions.
The weight of wire will be proportional to its length......each foot weighs so much and total weight depends on the length.
you need to know from the question are the values in proportion?...... They could be directly proportional or inversely proportional..????

The ratio of the weight of 90 ft to its 90 foot length will be same as the ratio of the weight of 110 ft to its length of 110 ft......direct proportion
So....... 18 / 90 = X / 110
and 90 * X = 18 * 110
and X = 22 lbs

But the oven question is ambiguous.....If 1 cake is put in oven it takes 38 minutes to bake......If 20 cakes are put in the oven it does not take 20 * 38 to bake. So the quantity baked is not proportional to the time if all 20 are put in oven together.

The postings now imply that only 1 cake is baked at any one time and each cake takes 38 mins.... so each cake waits on the last one to be baked then the next one is put in the oven. So total time is the cumulate time of 38 times the number of cakes.

If one cake takes 38 min then
20 cakes will take x min
1 cake = 38 min
20 cake = x min
x= 38 x 20
x = 760 min
Convert it into hours by dividing it by 60

760/60 = 12.6 hours
