Width - Space

Width - Space

Postby Guest » Wed Mar 11, 2015 10:01 pm

Here is another width related problem:

The distance between the centers of two consecutive posts in a fence is L feet and the posts are each X inches in width. There are N boards each A inches in width spaced equally. Determine width of each space.

Let w = width

How do I proceed ?

As usual there are some assumptions

The open space between the posts is (L - X)

There will be N boards within this space each of width A inches, so total is (NA) inches

There will be (N + 1) spaces of width "W" assuming an equal space at each end, so total space is W(N + 1) inches

Then..... (NA) + W(N + 1) = (L - X)

So that means W = [(L - X) - (NA)] / (N + 1) inches
