A question from the A Level Pure Mathematics 1 Coursebook Ca

Postby paramountbooks » Fri Oct 16, 2026 6:15 am

I’m working through the A Level Pure Mathematics 1 Coursebook Cambridge AS & A Level and wanted to discuss one of the basic problem-solving approaches used in the book.
For questions involving the distance between two numbers on a number line, I understand that we can use the absolute difference between them.
For example:
What is the distance between 6 and 104?
My solution would be:

|104 - 6| = 98

Yes, the difference can be used to find the distance between two points on the number line.

Two dimensional:
d=[tex]\sqrt{(x1-x2)²+(y1-y2)²}[/tex]
Three dimensional
d=[tex]\sqrt{(x1-x2)²+(y1-y2)²+(z1-z2)²}[/tex]
