Word Problem

When two numbers are added together it equals 30. Twice the second number is 6 more than 4 times the first number. What are these numbers? I want to solve algebraically.

Solution:

Let us say first number is n. So the second number shall be (30-n)
multiply the second number by 2, it yields = 2 (30 - n). This is ‘equal’ to 6 more than 4 times the first number (n). Say (4n + 6)

Thus we have 2(30-n) = 4n + 6

60 - 2n = 4n + 6
54 = 6n
n = 9
so first number is 9 and the other number is (30 - 9) = 21

We can check it now: 2(21) = 42 & 4(9) = 36, and one is 6 more than the other.

It's quite easy question and is solved well but if you want to solve questions related to ratios as what is the ratio behind any number or related to it then you can try to use tutorial sites .
