Length- Boards

Postby Guest » Tue Apr 07, 2015 4:32 pm

A garden 40.5 feet in length and 30.25 feet in width, is to be enclosed with a fence. The fence is 7.5 feet in height. Determine number of boards needed.

My solution:

Perimeter - 2l + 2w

40.5 + 40.5 + 30.25 + 30.25 = 141.5 feet + 7.5 (height) = 149 feet

Using various lengths of boards:

149 / 6 = 24.83 = 25

149 / 8 = 18.625 = 19

149 / 10 = 14.9. = 15

149 / 12 = 12.41 = 12

I don't believe that is the correct solution.

If the boards are horizontal need to know length of them and how many high...........
If the boards are vertical need to know the width of each and the spacing......

"If the boards are horizontal need to know length of them and how many high........... Does not indicate either.
If the boards are vertical need to know the width of each and the spacing......" Does not indicate either.

That was the complete problem. Can you solve using random lengths, height, width, and spacing ? Thanks.

Boards can be any length or any width and can be put in any configuration to build a fence so there is an infinite number of answers to your ambiguous question

Please post a solution using the following dimensions as an example:

2 x 4 - 6 feet in length - 1 inch spacing.

1 x 6 - 5 feet in length - .5 inch spacing.

Thanks.

Using the dimensions of lumber:

2" by 4" 6 feet in length with 1 inch spacing between boards.

1" by 4" 5 feet in length with .5 inch spacing between boards.

Maybe that will help.

The statement should be: Determine feet of boards needed. Sorry for the typo.

Total length (in feet) of boards needed for fence.

The question does not make sense to me. What are you asking? Do you understand the question? If so explain it in terms of the construction of the fence and the thing to be fenced.
If you do not understand the question you are asking, how can you expect to understand the answer.

The garden is 40.5 feet long and 30.25 feet wide and is to be enclosed with a fence 7.5 feet high. Determine feet of boards needed for fence.

My attempt:

Perimeter - 2l + 2w

40.5 + 40.5 + 30.25 + 30.25 = 141.5 feet + 7.5 (height) = 149 feet

Use 2" by 4" boards 8 feet in length with 1 inch spacing between boards.

What are you asking?? All you are doing is asking "How many boards? or How many feet? You are not saying how the boards are put on the fence.
So if there is one board put horizontally around the whole garden at a height of 7.5 feet, Is that a fence??.

Boards are placed horizontally, 5 boards high.

Boards are placed vertically, 1 inch spacing.

Use 2 x 4 boards, 8 feet in length.
