Solution: Let the number is x
then 2/5 of x=2x/5
x exceeds 1/7 of number 36

there for the equation 2x/5=x/7+36
2x/5-x/7-36=0
9(x-140)/35=0

x=140

the number is 140. :)

I agree that the method is correct but I would have written it a little differently.

Yes, calling "the number" x, "2/5 of the number" is 2x/5.
Yes, "1/7 of that same number" is x/7.

I would have written "A exceeds B by C'" as A- B= C so "2/5 of a number exceeds 1/7 of the same number by 36" as 2x/5- x/7= 36 immediately.

Then 2(7)x/5(7)- 5x/7(5)= 14x/35- 5x/35= 9x/35= 36.

x= 36(35/9)= (36/9)(35)= 4(35)= 140.

That is, of course, exactly what Jonasmathwork got.

A few more words could have been used to make it clearer to those who are not already adept at this kind of problem.

Just to stick my oar in:
Let "the number" be "x". Then "2/5 of a number","2/5 of x", is 2x/5. "1/7 of the same number", "1/7 of x", is x/7.

"2/5 of a number exceeds 1/7 of the same number by 36" is 2x/5- x/7= 36.

Instead of getting a common denominator and adding the fractions, I would clear the fractions entirely by multiplying both sides by 5(7)= 35.
35(2x/5)- 35(x/7)= 35(36).
14x- 5x= 1260.
9x= 1260
x= 1260/9= 140.
