“At $8 a yard, one-fifth of the cost of a piece of clothing was lost: what was the cost?”

If 1/5 was lost then 1- 1/5= 4/5 remains. So 4/5 of the cost is \$8. to go back to the cost, undo that "4/5". (5/4)(4/5= 1 so the cost is 5/4 of \$8.
