[tex]\displaystyle\frac{3}{5}=\frac{18}{30}[/tex]

[tex]\displaystyle\frac{4}{6}=\frac{20}{30}[/tex]

So [tex]\displaystyle\frac{3}{5}<\frac{4}{6}[/tex]

[tex]\displaystyle\frac{7}{8}=\frac{70}{80}[/tex]

[tex]\displaystyle\frac{9}{10}=\frac{72}{80}[/tex]

So, [tex]\displaystyle\frac{7}{8}<\frac{9}{10}[/tex]

in order to compare fractions you need to have a common denominator. So say you're comparing 1/2 to 3/5, you know 2 and 5 both go into 10, so 1/2=x/10 and cross-multiply to get x=5. Then do 3/5=x/10 and cross-multiply to get x=6. Now which is bigger, 5/10 or 6/10??? Your answer is that 3/5 is larger.

And to find 13% of 45 you multiply 45 by .13. When you find that 10% of 45 is 4.5, you are actually multiplying 45 by .10.

Thank you Kelvin. I understand your explanation.
I would just like to ask you why the common denominator of 1/2 and 3/5 is 10?
And how much is the common denominator of 7/8 and 9/10 ?

The common denominator is 10 because 10 is the least common multiple of 2 and 5 (the denominators) as you can see it by writing some multiplies of both 2 and 5 as shown below:

2 = 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12..... (is a list of multiples of 2)
5 = 5, 10, 15, 20......... (multiplies of 5)

Now look for the lest multiple which is common in both. Which is 10

To find the common denominator of 7/8 and 9/10, write some multiples of 8 and 10 as shown below:

8 = 8, 16, 24, 32, 40, 48.........(most often we need to write first 5 or 6 multiples)
10 = 10, 20, 30, 40................(Once you find the common multiple stop there, in this case we got 40)

Hence, the common denominator is 40 for 7/8 and 9/10.

3/5 > 3/8

because 5 < 8 and the the numerators of both fractions are the same(3).

As 3/5 is 0.6 and
4/6 is 0.66667
so 4/6>3/5 and
7/8 is 0.875 and
9/10 is 0.9
So 9/10 > 7/8.

Hi:

To compare 2 fractions

[tex]\frac{3}{5 }\: ,\: \frac{4}{6 }[/tex]

[tex]1st:\: 3\times 6=18[/tex]

[tex]2nd:\: 5\times 4=20[/tex]

[tex]\therefore \: \: \: \frac{3}{5}\: <\: \frac{4}{6}[/tex]

simply Think this way we will get the answer -
a)
3/5 = 3 x6/5x6 = 18 /30
And, 4/6=4 x5/6 x5 = 20/30
Ans. 4/6 bigger

b)

7/8 = 7 x5/8x5 = 35/40
And, 9/10 = 9 x4/10x4 = 36/40
So, 9/10 is bigger

The solution goes like this
3 / 5 = 0.6 and 4 / 6 = 0.66667
so clearly
4 /6 is greater.
same we can do with
7/8 or 9/10.

Yes, It's very simple just divide all the numbers and then see and easily decide.
