Chapter 2, Section 2.1

Determine whether the equation defines y as a function of x.

27. y = x^2

33. x = y^2

In terms of 27, for every value we plug into x^2, we get one value of y. So, the equation represents y as a function of x.

In terms of 33, when we take the square root on both sides, we get y = -sqrt{x} and y = sqrt{x}. For every value we plug into x, we get two values for y. So, this equation does not represent y as a function of x.

What do you say?

It feels so good to be correct.
