Elementary Row Operations on a 3x3 matrix

Can someone please clarify whether it is possible to add or subtract the multiples of two rows? As far as I know it is possible to multiply a row by a non-zero constant and also add two rows to each other, so why was I told that adding/subtracting the multiples of two rows is not allowed? I was still getting the same inverse as an answer, but I was told that it cannot be done.

Adding a multiple if one row to another is a "row operation". I'm not clear what "add or subtract multiples of two rows" means. It seems to me that "add 3 times row one and 4 times row two to row three", if that is the kind of thing you mean, is the same as "add 3 times row one to row three", a row operation, and then "add 4 times row two to row three", another row operation.
