Hi, as part of my engineering degree I am faced with the following problem. I was hoping someone could give me some guidance. I have a basic understanding of matrices, eigenvalues & eigenvectors.

''Write a short essay approximately 2 pages (for a first-year engineering class). Explain
the application of Eigenvalues and Eigenvectors to estimate the modes
of vibration for a structure under a disturbance such as earthquakes''

Any help will be appreciated.

It looks to me like the part you need help with is NOT "mathematics" at all! What are "modes of vibration of a structure"?
