Square Yards

A circular lake is 240' in diameter. A walkway 6' wide is around the lake. Determine number of sq. yds. in walkway.

Area of circle: Pi * r^2.

240' = 720 yds.

6' = 18 yds.

Not sure how to solve.

Numbers:
1 yd = 3 ft
1 ft = 12 in

So:
240' = 240 ft = 80 yd
6' = 6 ft = 2 yd

The area of walkway:
Radius of Circular lake:
80 / 2 = 40 yd

Radius of Circular lake plus walkway:
40 + 2 = 42 yd

Area (external circle minus internal circle):
[tex]A=\pi\cdot\left(42^2-40^2\right)\\
A=164\pi\approx 515,22\;\text{sq yd}[/tex]

There are 3 feet in a yard, not 3 yards in a foot!

240 feet is 240/3= 80 yards, not 3(240)= 720.

You should have at least realized that a yard is longer than a foot so it takes fewer than 240 yards to cover 240 feet and seen that it could not be 720 yards.
