x^2 + 4x - 12 = 0
We find the discriminant D=16-(-48)=64
Now we find the roots ot the equation
x1=(-4+8)/2=2
x2=(-4-8)/2=-6

solving quadratic equation

Postby Nikconsult » Sat Jun 10, 2006 3:07 pm

Given x^2 + 4x - 12 = 0
(x+6)(x-2) = 0

therefore
x+6 = 0 or x-2 = 0
so
x=-6 or x = 2

Michael drove to a friend's house at a rate of 40mph. He returned by th same route at a rate of 45 mph. The driving time for the round trip was 4 hours. Write and solve an equation to find the distance that Michael traveled.

Please help me on how to do this problem. Thanks for any help/tips

The equation is :-
x^2 + 4x - 12 = 0
Ans :-
x^2 + 4x -12 = 0
x^2 + 6x - 2x -12 = 0
x(x+6) -2(x + 6) = 0
(x + 6)(x -2)
x = -6, x = 2

x^2 + 4x - 12 = 0
Now
as we know D=b^2 - 4ac
So a/c to it
here b=4 , c= 12
D= 16- 4 x 1 x 12
D= - 32
So you can solve these as algebraic expressions definition .So solve it as explained .

I think this is the right way of solving the equation
x^2 + 4x - 12 = 0
after splitting the middle term
(x+6)(x-2) = 0
then
x+6 = 0 or x-2 = 0
so
x=-6 or x = 2
