A pond .75 acres in area is frozen over. The ice is 3.5 in. in thickness and specific gravity is 0.92. Determine weight of ice (tons).

.75 acres = 32670 sq. ft.

Weight of ice = 57 lbs. per cu. ft.


32670 x 0.29166 = 9528.5322 = 9529 cu. ft.

9259 x 57 = 527763 / 2000 = 263.88 = 264 tons

Where am I correct ?

Weight of ice = 57 lbs. per cu. ft. ..........OK but rounded

32670 x 0.29166 = 9528.5322 = 9529 cu. ft. .......OK but calc to a high accuracy then rounded?

9259 x 57 = 527763 / 2000 = 263.88 = 264 tons .......should have used 9529 cu ft...gives 271.58 tons

A question: Should the specific gravity be used in the calculation ?

I thought you had used the specific gravity here and then rounded the result.....but maybe you just looked it up from tables etc.....
Weight of ice = 57 lbs. per cu. ft. ..........OK but rounded

Water weighs 62.42 lbs per cu.ft so with ice having a specific gravity of 0.92 relative to water then......

Ice weighs 62.42 x 0.92 = 57.43 lbs per cu.ft. .....and when rounded = 57 lbs per cu. ft.

The specific gravity was included in the problem. I looked up the weight per cu. ft.
