Here is a similar problem:

A box is to be made from a rectangular sheet of paper with 1.5 " squares removed from corners. Determine volume of box.

Dimensions of paper - 11" x 17".

Volume - length x width x height.

My partial solution:

Let V = volume.

(11 - 1.5) (17 - 1.5) Area of box.

187 - 16.5 - 25.5 + 2.25 (multiplying out)

What do I do from here ?

Read the question carefully.....

A box is to be made from a rectangular sheet of paper with 1.5 " squares removed from corners. Determine volume of box.

Dimensions of paper - 11" x 17".

You need to first of all make mathematical sense out of the information given in the problem
The squares are 1.5 inches...so that means when tabs that are left are bent up to make the sides that will be the depth of the box....depth = 1.5 inches
And the length of the box will be 17 - (2 x 1.5) = 17 - 3 = 14 inches
And the width of the box will be 11 - (2 x 1.5) = 11 - 3 = 8 inches
And the volume will be length x width x depth = 14 x 8 x 1.5 = 168 cubic inches.

Thanks - that helped.

Could you provide some additional tips for solving these type problems - find the dimensions for the material used for the box, the size squares removed, and volume ? I attempted a search on the internet but did not find each type. Thanks.

Then main tip would be to...Read the question carefully.....and see what info you are given and try and formulate it into mathematical statements.
Read theough my solution and try to understand the steps and how it progresses to the answer.
There should be hundreds of examples on this topic on the internet....search for mensuration type problems, Area problems, volume problems. volumes of boxes, prism, comes and cylinders etc
