A tank has curved ends and dimensions of 2' x 2' x 6'. Determine volume (gallons) of tank.

Volume - Length x Width x Depth.

2 x 2 x 6 = 24 cu. ft.

24 x 7.48 (cu ft. of water) = 179.52 = 180 gal.

Answer given is less.

Where did I make the error(s) ?

What shape is the tank

Is it cylindrical with hemispherical ends

Is it square section with curved ends vertical or horizontal curve

The shape is oval and is a watering tank for livestock.

Dimensions appear to be 2' wide, 2' deep, 6" in length - does not specify - just 2' x 2' x 6'.

Also, please calculate if the tank was 2" wide, 2' long, 6" deep - Could the tank be oval with those dimensions ?

Probably part of an elipse in section width 2 feet (the major axis) and 6 inches deep (half the minor axis) and 2 feet long with with ends cut off straight at right angles (square ends)

But from your information I could guess or dream up any shape that uses your figures

Dimensions appear to be 2' wide, 2' deep, 6" in length- - should be 6', not 6".

The tank is in a catalog of farm, lawn and garden related products.

Description is "Round End Tank 2' x 2' x 6' ".

Well, then it may be elipical in section 2 feet wide (minor axis), 2 feet deep (half major axis) and 6 feel long with square ends
But that would be a round bottom tank.

OR

It may be roughly the shape of a rounded coffin...
Eliptical open top and vertical sides...2 feet wide (minor axis), 6 feet long (major axis) and 2 feet deep vertical parallel sides.
That would be an eliptical prism shape standing on its eliptical bottom with vertical sides
and that would be a roundended tank.

Well now....I don't think it is eliptical at all....

I googled this on the internet and found one similar here..... With the approximate capacity given

So it has semicircular ends a rectangular bit in the middle and is 2 feet wide, 2 feet deep with vertical sides (near enough) and overall 6 feet long.

It tells you that it is 169 gallons

The 2 semicircular ends make up 1 circular prism 2 ft dia and 2 ft long
The rectangular bit in the middle is a square prism 2 ft deep x 2 ft wide x 4 ft long
You just find the volume of each and add together and convert to gallons

Circular prism - pi x r^2 x h - same as cylinder ?

3.1416 x 1 x 1 x 2 = 6.2832 cu. ft.

square prism - length x width x depth

2 x 2 x 4 = 16 cu. ft.

6.2832 + 16 = 22.2832 x 7.48 = 166.67 = 167 gal.
