R: original radius of the circle

Increasing the area by 22 would be πr²+22, as the area of a circle is πr²

Increasing the radius by 1 would result in an area of π(r+1)²

πr²+22=(r+1)²π

Simplify:
πr²+22=πr²+2πr+π

2πr+π=22

2([tex]\frac{22}{7}[/tex])r=[tex]\frac{154-22}{7}[/tex]

[tex]\frac{44r}{7}[/tex]=[tex]\frac{132}{7}[/tex]

r=[tex]\frac{142}{44}[/tex]
=3

Nicely-done.
