A shipment of railroad ties measuring 400,000 board feet contains as many truck loads as there are board feet in a tie.
Each truck holds 250 ties. Determine total number of ties and number of board feet in one tie.

Let T = number of ties.

Let B = board feet in one tie.


Board feet = 12 inches long, 12 inches wide, 1 inch thick.

How do I proceed ?

Let T = no of trucks
250T = no of ties
400000/250T = board feet per tie
Then set both equal as it says in the question
T = 1600/T
T^2 = 1600
T = 40
There are 250 x 40 = 10000 ties in the shipment
There are 400000 / 10000 = 40 board feet per tie
