A wire fence is to be constructed with 9 wires. The lowest 3 wires have spaces 3, 3, and 4 inches, with spaces between remaining wires becoming wider by the same amount. Determine spaces between remaining wires.

Height of fence- 52.5 inches.

3 + 3 + 4 + x + 3 + x + 3 + x + 4 + x + 3 + x + 3 + x + 4 = 52.5

6x + 30 = 52.5
6x + 30 - 30 = 52.5 - 30
6x = 22.5
6x/6 = 22.5/6
x = 3.75 inches

3 + 3 + 4 + 3.75 + 3 + 3.75 + 3 + 3.75 + 4 + 3.75 + 3 + 3.75 + 3 + 3.75 + 4 = 49.5

Where did I make the error(s) ?

I miscalculated. Is this the correct procedure to solve ?

I discovered the same problem in a different location with this suggestion:

3 + 3 + 4 + 4 + x + 4 + 2x + 4 + 3x + 4 + 4x + 4 + 5x

3 + 3 + 4 + 4 + 4 + 4 + 4 + 4 = 30

x + 2x + 3x + 4x + 5x = 15x

15x = 30

15x/15 = 30/15

x = 2


3 + 3 + 4 + 4 + 2 + 4 + 2(2) + 4 + 3(2) + 4 + 4(2)+ 4 + 5(2) = 62

Where did I miscalculate ?

Also, why is the "4" added each time ?

Is the "4" added to each space for the same amount and due to the fact it is the largest space ?
