Question considering inequalities

Postby kate » Wed Sep 26, 2007 8:54 am

Can somebody tell me when the inequality
ax2 + bx + c ≥ 0,
where a, b, c are real numbers, has one positive and one negative root?

I think you mean equation, not inequality.
The equation [tex]ax^2+bx+c=0[/tex] has a negative root and a positive root if the product of the roots is negative.
That means [tex]\frac{c}{a}<0[/tex].
Also, the roots must be real and distinct, thus [tex]b^2-4ac>0[/tex]

Yeah I also think that she means equation not inequality.

I realise that I'm new to this group and don't want to start off on a negative note, but I have been assisting for a long time in several other newsgroups, and am here to tell you that "kate" sends her questions to more than one forum, and never show any personal effort. I like to distinguish between help and do-my-homework.

And can I ask where else have I post my questions?

Find the values of the parameter a for which the equation
ax2 + 5x - 4 = 10
has a negative and a positive root.

Your question is not so clear and I'm unable to understand that what you need to ask here. As already other people mentioned here that question is not correct.
