Division is the reverse of multiplication: 56 ÷ 8 = 7, because 7 × 8 = 56. That is why the multiplication chart is also a division table. To find 56 ÷ 8, go down the left column to 8, along its row to 56, and then up to the top row: the answer is 7. Hover over or tap a square to see its two division facts.
56 ÷ 8 = 7 and 56 ÷ 7 = 8

Division by 0 is not allowed. Zero divided by any number other than 0 is zero.
Why? 0 ÷ 5 = 0, because 0 × 5 = 0. But 5 ÷ 0 would have to be a number that gives 5 when multiplied by 0. Every number times 0 is 0, so there is no such number.
Fact Families
Three numbers such as 7, 8 and 56 make a fact family: two multiplication facts and two division facts.
7 × 8 = 568 × 7 = 56 56 ÷ 7 = 856 ÷ 8 = 7
To divide, ask the multiplication question: 56 ÷ 8 = ? means “what number times 8 is 56?”. It is 7, so 56 ÷ 8 = 7.
Shortcuts for Division
Division

Example
Dividing by 1
The number does not change.
9 ÷ 1 = 9
A number by itself
The answer is 1 (for any number except 0).
9 ÷ 9 = 1
Dividing by 2
Take half of the number.
18 ÷ 2 = 9
Dividing by 4
Halve the number, then halve it again.
36 ÷ 4 = 9 (36 → 18 → 9)
Dividing by 8
Halve the number three times.
72 ÷ 8 = 9 (72 → 36 → 18 → 9)
Dividing by 10
Remove the 0 at the end.
70 ÷ 10 = 7
Dividing by 5
Double the number, then divide by 10.
45 ÷ 5 = 9 (90 ÷ 10 = 9)
Practice Test
At level 2 some questions have a missing number, such as ? ÷ 7 = 8.
