Rational are all numbers, which can be expressed in the form x\frac{p}{q}, qhere [texp\in Z,q\in Z_0[/tex]. That means p is a whole number, q is also a whole number, but cannot be 0.
An example for rational numbers is 6,\: \frac{1}{2},\: 0.3,\: 0.333(3)(which\: is\: \frac{1}{3}) \: and\: so\: on

Irrational numbers on the other hand cannot be expressed in the form \frac{p}{q}.
Examples are \sqrt{2},\: \sqrt{5},\: \sqrt{23} and so on.

I fixed some typing mistakes.
It will be a good idea if I can edit my posts

Irrational numbers are quotients with non-repeating, non-terminating decimals.

So, the rational ones are 1, 3, and 4.
The irrational ones are 2 and 5.

hi guys let me tell you the irrational numbers definition .A number is called irrational, if it cannot be expressed as quotient of integers pq, q ≠ 0. .Non-repeating, non-terminating decimal numbers cannot be expressed in the form of a fraction. The cube root of any non-perfect cube number is also an irrational number. 3√3
Examples of irrational numbers are 2√, 3√, 7√, 1.123245278921763

A rational number is any number that can be written as a fraction or ratio that is p/q. here q should not be zero.
If it cannot be written as a fraction or ratio, it is an irrational number.

Example :

Pi is an example of an irrational number.
1.5 is an example of a rational number.

I do not understand why you say that

Pi is an example of an irrational number.

why?

Also is it possible q=0?

There is a nice article on rational and irrational numbers on ezine articles directory. The following link takes you to the article, hope it clears the concept of rational and irrational numbers further.
